Friday night was
like most Friday’s at the Mag, maybe a little slower. Around 2:30 or so I
saw Kevin walk this cute girl to her car. He came back after a moment and
said to me with a smile on his face, “I’ve still got it.” My response
was, “Yes, you do!” and I pointed at him with both hands. We talked a
little more and he went to get a drink.
Around
3:00, Kevin was standing at the corner of the bar putting on his jacket.
Me, being the master of the obvious said, “You going home?” The response
was, “Yep.” I then said, “Well don’t forget, you still got it.” He
smiled and said, “Yes, I do.”
That
was the last time I saw Kevin. He didn’t show up for work the next
afternoon. He didn’t show up at the bar at all Saturday.
Sunday,
Kevin’s Mom found him at home sitting in his chair. Just sitting in his
chair.
I
like to think that he went home that night, sat down in his chair and fell
asleep with a smile on his face. Thinking of a cute girl, secure in the
knowledge that he still had it.
